Doorway pages vs location pages: where Google draws the line
A location page is a doorway page when it exists only to rank for a city and gives the visitor nothing they could not get from any other page on the site. A genuine location page describes something real about serving that place: who you serve there, what is different locally, and how to get help. The template can be shared. The substance cannot.

What Google means by doorway pages
Google's spam policies describe doorways as pages created to rank for specific, similar search queries that lead people to intermediate pages less useful than the real destination. Pages aimed at specific cities or regions that all funnel visitors to the same place are one of the examples Google gives. That is exactly what a careless set of city pages looks like.
Location page, service-area page or doorway?
- Branch page: a page for a physical location with its address, team, hours and directions. These are almost never a problem.
- Service-area page: a page for a city or locality you serve without an office there. Legitimate when the page says something true about serving that area.
- Doorway page: a service-area or city page that is the same as every other one with the place name swapped. It answers nothing specific to that place.
The “would this page exist without search engines?” test
Ask whether a real person in that city would find the page useful if search engines did not exist. A useful page answers questions that depend on the place: which neighbourhoods you cover, local demand or conditions, typical costs there, how quickly you can reach someone, and what nearby customers ask. If the honest answer is no, the page is a doorway, however good the writing is.
Doorway page vs location page at a glance
| Doorway page | Genuine location page | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Rank for a place name | Help people in that place |
| Content | Same text, city swapped | Facts specific to the place |
| Links | Footer block or sitemap only | Part of a clear service and city hierarchy |
| Visitor value | Funnels elsewhere | Answers the local question on the page |
What are the signs a city page is a doorway page?
- The text reads the same if you replace the city name with another one.
- No local detail beyond the city name in headings.
- Pages for places the business does not actually serve.
- Every page funnels to one form or one page with no local answer on the page itself.
- Dozens of near-identical pages for overlapping localities.
- Pages reachable only from a sitemap or footer block, not from a logical site structure.
- No difference in the page that a local visitor would notice.
A side-by-side example
Take a dental group with clinics in Pune and Nagpur. A doorway version of “dental implants in Nagpur” repeats the Pune page with the city name changed. A genuine version names the Nagpur clinic and the areas it draws patients from, explains what affects implant cost locally, lists the questions Nagpur patients ask at consultation, and links to root canal and aligner pages for Nagpur and to implant pages for nearby cities. Same layout, different substance.
How to audit your existing city pages
- Export every location URL and pick three at random from different regions.
- Swap the city names between them. If nothing else needs to change, they are doorways.
- Check Search Console: pages that are “Crawled, currently not indexed” in bulk are a warning sign.
- Rewrite with local research, or merge thin pages into a regional page.
When to merge or delete
If you cannot say anything specific about a place, a page for it does not help anyone. Merge small localities into a regional page, redirect the old URLs to it, and keep separate pages for places where you have real presence or real demand.
How Scaleo handles it
Scaleo researches each city before writing and has a second model score every page. A page that would read the same in another city fails the check, goes back with the reasons, and is rewritten or held back instead of published. How the quality check works.

Questions about doorway pages vs location pages
Are location pages doorway pages?
Not by themselves. A location page becomes a doorway when it exists only to rank for a place and says nothing specific about serving it. Pages with real local substance are legitimate.
Can I use the same template for all my city pages?
Yes. A shared layout is fine and normal. The content inside the layout has to be specific to each service and place.
Will Google penalise my site for doorway pages?
Doorway abuse is listed in Google's spam policies, and sites that violate them can rank lower or be removed from results. Thin city pages also tend to be left out of the index without any penalty.
